Causes of Dry Eye

There can be a variety of underlying causes of dry eyes, including:

Our tears are made up of three components: mucous, water, and oil. If one or more of these elements are absent or their ratio is out of balance, tear quality is compromised. The result is dry, uncomfortable eyes.

Just as important as the quality of our tears is the volume of tears our eyes produce. If the glands that produce tears are jeopardized, or a medical condition or environmental factors hinder our tear production, our eyes cannot stay adequately lubricated.

Certain medical conditions can significantly contribute to dry eyes. Diabetes and certain autoimmune disorders, such as arthritis and lupus, can compromise both the quality and quantity of our tear film.

Blepharitis, an inflammation of eyelid oil glands, is known to be a leading cause of dry eye. Similarly, some medications have side effects that can adversely affect our eyes’ moisture levels.

Many environmental factors can contribute to dry eyes. Things like excessive screen time can cause us to blink less, leading to dry eyes. Contact lenses, smoky, dry, or windy climates, and even makeup can compromise the tear film and intensify dry eye symptoms.

Our Dry Eye Management & Treatment Strategies

A diagnosis must always start with a detailed assessment. Before we can recommend successful management and treatment options, we will conduct a thorough dry eye assessment to determine the root cause of your dry eye.

From discussing lifestyle and medical history to measuring tear production to examining your contact lenses and their fit, we use a variety of diagnostic tools and techniques to determine exactly why your eyes are dry and how best to solve the issue.

Some of our management and treatments strategies include:

Heat can often help dry eye disease by opening oil glands, which allows oil to flow back into the eye. At Eye Care Group, we offer BRUDER Moist Heat Eye Compress, which can help with dry eye and digital eye strain.

We offer a variety of cleansing products for eyelid and lash hygiene. These products remove mucus, ocular debris, and makeup while hydrating surrounding skin. These can control inflammation and redness around the eyelids and control blepharitis, a common cause of dry eyes.

Artificial tears are eye drops that can be purchased without a prescription. These drops mimic your natural tears and can be used as needed to help control cornea inflammation, and comfort and lubricate eyes.
