Protect Your Eye Health & Preserve Your Vision

Your eyes are important: protect them with regular eye exams.

Not only do our eye exams detect any vision changes, but we monitor all fluctuations in your eye health and check for common eye diseases that can appear without noticeable symptoms. It is for this reason that an eye exam is one of the best ways to protect your vision: it detects eye problems at their earliest stage when they are most susceptible to treatment.

When was your last eye exam? Book an appointment with us today.

What To Expect: Our Process

During our comprehensive eye exam, we will conduct tests to assess your visual acuity (sharpness of vision) and determine if you require prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. This test includes reading the eye chart and testing binocular vision, depth perception, ocular motility, colour blindness, and more.

Thorough testing will also be done to determine the overall state of your eye health. We use several cutting-edge diagnostic techniques and testing procedures to detect signs of common eye diseases, so that they can be addressed as soon as possible.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends the following eye exam schedule:

Patients between the ages of twenty and sixty-four have their eyes examined at least every two years. Our Optometrists may recommend more frequent exams depending upon the findings.

Adults aged sixty-five and older should have their eyes examined annually or as recommended by their Optometrist.

If you are an individual with diabetes, we recommend scheduling an eye exam every 6 months to a year to manage the risks of diabetic eye disease.

Be Prepared! Tips For a Successful Eye Exam

At Eye Care Group, we want your exam to be as thorough as possible. To serve you better, here are some preparation tips for your next eye exam.

Please bring:

  • Your insurance information
  • A list of any questions you may have or concerns you would like to address
  • A list of all medications or other supplements you are currently taking
  • Your current eyeglasses or contact lenses (if applicable)
  • A list of your eye history and your family’s medical history

Common Eye Issues

Myopia is growing to be one of the most common refractive errors patients experience around the globe. What makes it so prevalent is its ability to develop to develop at an incredibly young age and progress until the patient is 25 years old.

Myopia occurs when your eye becomes elongated. This elongated shape then prevents light that enters your eye from focusing on your retina, instead focusing it in front of your retina. When this happens, it can blur your distance vision, but your near vision remains clear.

Astigmatism occurs when you have the inability to see at far or near distances. It generally occurs when you have an irregularly shaped cornea, which then prevents light that enters your eye from focusing evenly on your retina, causing blurry vision.

Astigmatism often occurs in tandem with refractive errors like myopia and hyperopia, which also impairs your eye’s ability to focus light on your retina properly.

Glaucoma is one of the most common eye diseases people can develop. There are 3 common types of glaucoma (open-angle glaucoma, closed-angle glaucoma, and normal-tension glaucoma) and they all can damage your vision by deteriorating your optic nerve.

Glaucoma can do this by raising your intraocular eye pressure, but it can also cause damage to your optic nerve without any other symptoms showing. The only way to detect glaucoma is by attending regular eye exams and having your optometrist observe the state of your optic nerve or by testing your intraocular pressure levels.

Diabetic retinopathy can occur when blockages form in the vessels behind your retina, due to excess glucose in your bloodstream. These blockages then cause the retina to develop new, but fragile, blood vessels.

Because of how delicate these new vessels are, they can break and leak fluids into your retina and macula, causing vision loss
