Your Child’s Vision is Priceless

At Eye Care Group, we love our littlest patients. That is why our top priorities include teaching them proper vision care and ensuring their eyes are healthy and developing as they should.

Vision plays a crucial role throughout childhood and beyond. Studies have shown that 80% of what children learn comes through their visual system. This means that if your child’s vision is compromised, it could hinder their development during their formative years.

Book a children’s eye exam in Edmonton with us today and get your child on the path to healthy vision and learning success!

What to Watch For

Younger children may not have developed the sensory awareness required to identify what clear vision looks like. As a result, they may not be able to communicate vision problems they are experiencing.

That is why, as parents, it is important to watch for signs. These may include:

  • Rubbing of the eyes
  • Blinking excessively
  • Frequently squinting, covering, or closing one eye
  • Having trouble maintaining eye contact
  • Tilting of the head or unusual posture when focusing on objects
  • Holding books, phone, or tablet close to their face while reading
  • Sitting too close to the television
  • Complaining of headaches or dizziness
  • Having trouble concentrating, hyperactivity, or a short attention span
  • Poor eye-hand coordination

If you notice your child doing one or more of the above behaviours, book an eye appointment with our team.

Eye See Eye Learn Program

To help ensure all children have a chance to visit the optometrist and receive the prescription eyewear they need, regardless of family income levels, Eye Care Group has partnered with the Eye See … Eye Learn program. This program supplies eye exams and free prescription eyeglasses for children in pre-kindergarten across Alberta.

Alberta Health Care covers all costs for comprehensive eye exams for all children up to 19 years old. For any extraneous circumstances, contact us for more information.

Your child’s first eye exam should be scheduled between the ages of six and nine months old. At this appointment, we will assess basic eye health and ensure your child’s depth perception and hand-eye coordination are developing properly.

Your child’s second exam should be scheduled between two and five years of age. In addition to assessing eye health, we will determine if your child can focus up close and at a distance. We will test their binocular vision and check for signs of strabismus (crossed eyes) and amblyopia (lazy eye).

From the ages of six to nineteen, children should have their eyes examined annually. Myopia (nearsightedness) commonly develops during childhood and adolescence, and many children end up requiring eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct refractive errors.
