Specialized Care for At-Risk Eyes

Diabetes is a serious disease that can greatly affect vision. It is currently the leading cause of blindness in Canada. And as of 2019, one in three Canadians either have diabetes or are at risk of developing this systemic condition.

People with diabetes have an elevated risk of developing eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts, and glaucoma.

It is important to be vigilant in your eye health – especially if diabetes is a part of your life. Book an eye exam with our friendly and knowledgeable team today.

Our Diabetic Eye Exam

During your exam, we will assess your vision and eye structures using specialized techniques and technology. Our state-of-the-art equipment includes a specialized fundus camera to photograph the back of the eye. We also use optical coherence tomography to take detailed pictures of your retina and macula, which allows us to better detect, treat, and manage diabetic eye disease.

If you have diabetes, you should visit your optometrist at least once per year. Your optometrist may recommend you undergo more frequent eye exams if you exhibit symptoms of diabetic eye disease.

What is Diabetic Eye Disease?

When our blood sugar levels are too high, the body becomes more susceptible to a range of complicated eye diseases. Some of these serious conditions include age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma.

However, two diseases can form as a direct result of diabetes: Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. If these diseases are not detected and treated, these conditions can be detrimental to healthy, clear vision.

High blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels in the retina, which can lead to diabetic retinopathy.

Over time, high blood sugar levels cause the blood vessels in the retina to break down or become blocked. The body is triggered to grow new vessels, but they are often weak, which can result in vision loss and even blindness.

If diabetic retinopathy remains undiagnosed and continues to develop, it can evolve into diabetic macular edema. Like diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema is caused by blood vessel damage in the retina. As the blood vessels become more damaged, they leak blood and fluid into the retina, causing the macula (the part of the eye responsible for central vision) to swell. When this happens, it can lead to compromised vision and, in some cases, blindness.
